As long as I eat vegan and organic will I have the best diet? Vegan means that one uses no animal products in the preparation of the food. There is a lot of "junk" food that is vegan and empty of good nutrition. Plant based food prepared as simply as possible and as unrefined as possible provides the best nutrition. A good balance of fruits, grains, nuts and vegetables provide an excellent source of good nutrition. Organically grown produce is grown without the many toxins used in the conventionally grown produce. Research generally supports the fact that organically grown produce, in most cases, is higher in nutrition than produce grown conventionally. The bottom line is nutrition. If one uses the proper balance of vegetables, fruits, grains, and nuts and in turn these are grown organically, then one can be confident of eating a diet far superior to many who eat otherwise. Check the library for several research articles on this topic. Is honey OK for a strict vegan? Technically honey is an animal product produced by the honeybee which is an insect. If one wants to be a strict vegan, no honey is used. It is our position that honey, when used in proper amounts, is an excellent sweetener and far better than refined sugar which, even though technically vegan, is not good for optimal health. We would suggest you also consider molasses or Agave as alternatives to refined sugar. Click for more information on honey and agave. I am suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure, and am a bit overweight. I find many places advertise they can help me overcome these conditions. Do you have any suggested guidelines on how to choose a proper program? We are not a health provider and cannot give medical advice. From our observation several factors need to be looked at. A good program should include:
● Promotion of a balanced vegan diet made with the best possible quality ingredients. Quality must include fresh ● Promotion of the proper use of exercise, rest, water, sunlight, stress management, and nutrition.
● Recognize the proper role of food supplements in some cases where regular food may not supply sufficient ● Contain hands-on instruction in proper food preparation. ● Uses sound medical and scientific evidence in carrying out the program. ● Recognizes the proper role of a Divine purpose and a Creator that desires all to be healthy.
● The cost fits your abilities. Keep in mind that an investment in good health provides a big return. Not being healthy, I have a German Shepard dog. What suggestions do you have to provide my dog with a vegan diet? A dog has a different digestive system than a human being. The teeth are different and designed to eat meat. It is obvious that the dog is designed to be carnivorous and not a vegetarian. One has to be very careful in trying to provide your dog a vegan diet and yet be assured that the dog receives the nutrition needed by a dog. While it is probably possible to do so it must be done very carefully. Recently we checked with several suppliers of quality dogfood to see if they had vegan dogfood available. We did find some but it was very expensive. We also received considerable warnings that a totally vegan food for dogs could be riskly, but of course not impossible. You may wish to check with your veteranarian for his or her suggestions. More FAQs
What does refining do to Sugar and Salt? In short the refining process removes the micronutrients which may be present in sugar or salt and leaves the pure substance behind. Refined sugar and salt is usually white. While both substances are vegan why would one want to remove the naturally occuring nutrients present the way nature provided. For example, the most nutrient dense portion of sugar is molasses, a substance which is removed in the refining process. The least refined cane sugar would be Sucanat. The least refined salts would be Celtic Sea Salt or Real Salt. There are many unrefined salts available. Regular refined salt often has anti-caking agents or other substances used for a variety of purposes. The refining process can use heat or chemical agents. Unrefined salt can have up to 60 different micronutrients present. Sometimes cost is cited as the reason to use a refined substance. This reason is short sighted as nutrition is the most important part of our diet. Besides, unrefined food ingredients have those full rich natural flavors we all seek as chefs. |
